It snowed all day, then all night. Down it came, clusters of soft flakes, blanketing the world in the clean whiteness that only fresh snowfall can bring. The kind that makes the world look innocent and new again.
Out for chores on the morning after, oh the shoveling we had to do! But the soft fluff we tossed out of the paths was more wonder than work…
Then Jim suggested we take a walk on the frozen lake. He shoveled a path to the lake stairs and down we went, into the quiet other world of an expanse of snow that had only been broken by a snow machiner riding through on the previous night, leaving a trail that was only partly filled in… Walking in snow deeper than my boot tops, the urge to flop into the pillowy softness was more than I cared to resist, and before too long, there were two snow angels on the lake. Jim’s and mine. His and hers.
When life gives you snow, you can shovel, or you can make snow angels.
It was a playful time, there on the ice, me pretending I didn’t want to be there and him teasing me to go just a little bit further.
The house seems far away when you’re on the lake. My wether, Xander, was up in his fort, calling for us to come home.
I don’t know how long we stayed on the lake. A long time. There was a snowball fight. There were giggles and laughter. We dug in the snow to see how far down the ice was – about a foot and a half.
Then it was time to come home. Up those long stairs. Looking back to see the sun had come out. Trying to see our snow angels from the yard, but couldn’t see them through the trees.
When we first moved to Alaska, I got the best piece of advice from two Home Depot delivery men. It had nothing to do with appliances, and everything to do with living life in a place where the winters are long and cold. They looked me in the eye and said:
“Don’t be afraid of winter. Winter is the time to play! Go outside.
Put on your coat, and go outside.”
With my sweet goats to take care of, going outside everyday happens easily. They keep me up and moving. They are good for me in so many ways. But there are days when I forget to play. It’s nice to be reminded sometimes.
